The Basset Hound.
Basset oh yes with those real sad eyes, hush puppies as some people call them, but are you ready for a basset, as you must be sure as its a puppy that will grow up into a big dog on little legs and be a part of your family for many years .They can be a very stubborn and very independent, so you have to be prepared to put the training in and make sure you have a good sense of humour, they will do something so well and as soon as you want to show of your pets ability the basset will have a forgetful moment having the last laugh on you.
They love your time and make a lovely member of a family .You can always go along to the puppy training class and its good to introduce your new baby to others as very interested in different smells sights etc as well as you meet other people who may have gone through similar problems who can help and vice versa.
They are a great companion animal they are not for the person that wants to go for agility Frisbee throwing etc but once adult will love to walk for miles and if they decide they have changed their mind just sit down and have the last laugh. They only need short walks up to 6 to 9 months old as they have lots of bone growth to do. Take into account they are getting exercise pottering about the house in-between taking in all the home comforts. They are not a nesh breed mine love to play in the snow and don't seem to bother about the rain sometimes they remember they are hounds after all.
I always say to try and discourage your basset from going up and down stairs also steep steps out side etc as having such long backs and very low to the ground can have back problems if under exercised and over fed and allowed to climb .They are a breed that really love to eat so be aware not to over do those snacks.
They can take a little longer to house train as been a hound once a mistake has happened can encourage him/her to go back to the wrong area patience and observation getting to know your puppy will give great rewards in the end
The basset has a lovely disposition and you normally get a phone call 18 months on saying they want a companion for the first if you wish to have a chat either ring direct or email
